New orders for manufactured goods surged 10.5% in July, after climbing a revised 1.5% in June, originally reported as a 1.1% increase, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected an 11.0% surge in July orders.
Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.8% in July, after gaining a revised 1.4% the previous month, first reported as a 1.1% rise. Excluding defense, orders grew 11.3%, after a 1.5% increase in June.
Durable goods orders rose 22.6% after a 2.7% increase in June, while nondurable goods orders fell 0.9% after a 0.4% gain in June.
