Jindal Opposes Cuts

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is asking the Senate to reject spending cuts proposed by the House and restore at least $240 million in spending that the lower chamber removed from the governor’s $30 billion fiscal 2009 budget proposal.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Administration Angéle Davis asked the Senate Finance Committee earlier this week to restore funds cut by the House from the state Medicaid program, a proposed new literacy program, an expansion of a free pre-school program for poor children, and the state’s public college system.

The committee will consider the budget for several weeks before sending it to the full Senate.
