Initial jobless claims plunged 32,000 to 300,000 in the week ended April 5, the Labor Department said Thursday.
Claims for the week ended March 29 were revised to 332,000 from the 326,000 initially reported.
Continuing jobless claims were 2.776 million in the week ended March 29, down from the upwardly revised 2.838 million the week before, first reported as 2.836 million.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected 320,000 initial and 2.850 million continuing claims.
The four-week average of initial claims were down 4,750 in the week ended April 5 to 316,250.
