Historic Vote in Portland

In the Portland mayor’s race, city commissioner Sam Adams defeated Sho Dozono.

Adams took 58% of the vote. Dozono, who was supported by departing incumbent Mayor Tom Potter, took 34%. Adams won’t take office until November.

Adams, who once declared personal bankruptcy, was a long-time aide to former Mayor Vera Katz. He campaigned in part on his vision for big public works projects, including a $422 million street building measure that may go before city voters in November.

Adams’ election was historic because he is the first openly gay man elected mayor of a major American city.
