The University of Michigan's final March consumer sentiment index reading was 96.9, compared to the preliminary March 97.6 and the final February 96.3, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 86.5, compared to the preliminary March 86.7 and the final February 86.5, and the preliminary February 85.7.

The current conditions index was 113.2, compared to the preliminary March 114.5 and the final February 111.5.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 97.6 reading for the main index, 87.0 for expectations and 114.0 for current conditions.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.4%, compared to 2.5% in February, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.5%, compared to 2.7% in February.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
