The University of Michigan's final January consumer sentiment index reading was 81.2, compared to the preliminary January 82.5, the final December 80.4, and the preliminary December 82.5, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 71.2, compared to 70.9 earlier in January, 72.1 in December, and 72.7 earlier in December.
The current conditions index was 96.8, compared to 95.2 earlier in January, 98.6 in December, and 97.9 earlier in December.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 81.0 reading for the main index, 95.5 for current conditions and 71.5 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.7% in December, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.1%, compared to 3.0% in December.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
