CHICAGO — Cook County Comptroller Walter Knorr will leave his post to become chief financial officer for the University of Illinois, according to sources.

Bill Figel, a spokesman for Cook County Board President Todd Stroger, said yesterday that Knorr will leave his post once the county completes its budget process. Other sources indicated Knorr has accepted a position as the CFO for the university. Knorr could not be reached for comment.

In 2004, Knorr replaced Comptroller John Chambers, who held the job for 14 years. Prior to taking the job, Knorr had worked as a director at Citigroup Global Markets Inc., a post he took after leaving his post as CFO of Chicago in 2002.

Knorr submitted his resignation when Stroger took office this month, Figel said, as is customary during such transitions. While others will stay on, Knorr told the county he would stay only through the budget process, according to Figel. Stroger has said he would likely introduce a budget in mid-January.

The comptroller position, which pays about $150,000 a year, reports to the CFO, Tom Glaser. Glaser said yesterday he plans to remain in his post. “Until someone tells me otherwise, I plan to continue as CFO.”
