Chain Store Sales Fall 0.4% in Week

Chain store sales decreased 0.4% in the week ended Sept. 1, but were up 3.7% year-over-year, according to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot released Wednesday.

"The latest week leading up to the Labor Day weekend was mixed with the year-over-year sales pace accelerating a bit, but the sequential change off a tad," said Michael Niemira, ICSC vice president of research and chief economist.  "Some of the healthy year-over-year momentum from August seemed to carry into September with stronger business at grocery stores, department stores, apparel stores and wholesale clubs, according to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs consumer tracking survey," Niemira added.
