Central Falls Election Dates Set

The Rhode Island Board of Elections has scheduled the mayoral primary in distressed Central Falls for Nov. 6, the same day as presidential and other elections. The city's general election will be Dec. 11.

Central Falls is exiting bankruptcy protection after a 13-month stay under Chapter 9.

Under its five-year reorganization plan, state officials are scheduled to return the city to local control.

The mayor and City Council were stripped of their powers under state receivership.

Charles Moreau, mayor of the 19,000-population city for nine years, resigned last week while agreeing to plead guilty to a kickback scheme involving the boarding up of houses in the city.

Council member James Diossa last week became the third mayoral candidate.

Also running are former Mayor Thomas Lazieh and former police chief Joseph Moran.
