Camden COO Exiting

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine will look for a new state monitor for the city of Camden after Judge Theodore Z. Davis last week announced he will stop serving as the city's chief operating officer on Aug. 31.

Davis did not offer a reason for his resignation. Camden has been under state oversight since 2002, with the city's COO managing the municipality on behalf of New Jersey. The COO has the ability to veto the mayor and the City Council.

Corzine appointed Davis, a Camden native, as COO in September 2007 after he began serving as acting COO in January of that year. Davis' $220,000 salary has recently come under criticism.

Davis was a superior court judge for 22 years.

In addition, Tom Corcoran will end his 25-year tenure as founder and head of the Cooper's Ferry Development Association, a private, nonprofit entity that facilitates economic development along Camden's waterfront. Anthony Perno, CFDA's vice president and COO, will now serve as acting president.

Corcoran has crossed the Delaware River to oversee the economic growth of Philadelphia's waterfront, where he will serve as president of the Delaware River Waterfront Corp. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced the appointment last week.
