WASHINGTON (MNI) - The U.S. current account deficit narrowed to $98.9 billion in the second quarter after a slight widening in the previous quarter, data released Thursday by the Commerce Department showed.

The income surplus widened to $53.1 billion in the second quarter from $50.9 billion in the previous quarter, as receipts rose by $887 million, and payments to foreigners fell by $1.3 billion.   The goods and services gap narrowed to $117.8 billion from $122.6 billion in the previous quarter, as export growth sharply outpaced import growth.
