More moves for bond counsel rankings in first half of year

The top bond counsel in the first half of 2023 handled a combined $171.581 billion across 3,483 bond issues, down from $201.013 billion in 4,676 transactions this time last year. 

The top 10 bond counsel, which welcomed four newcomers this year, accounted for $77.823 billion across 1,066 issues during 1H 2023. The newcomers, Bracewell, Gilmore & Bell, Chapman and Cutler and Stradling Yocca Carlson & Ruth, knocked Bryant Rabbino, Butler Snow, Squire Patton Boggs and Miller Canfield out of the top 10.

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe is on top

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe retained first place on the list. The firm worked on $19.987 billion across 148 issues, down from $21.590 billion in 190 issues in the first half of last year. The firm's market share increased to 11.7% from last year's 10.7%.

Norton Rose Fulbright takes second place

Norton Rose Fulbright rose from third to second on the list in the first half of 2023. The firm's market share nearly doubled to 8.1% from 4.4%.

It handled $13.918 billion across 129 issues, up from $8.813 billion across 134 issues in 1H22.

Kutak Rock slips to third

Kutak Rock fell to third on the list, and the firm's par amount fell accordingly. Kutak Rock worked on $7.684 billion in 167 deals, with 4.5% of the market, compared to $11.565 billion in 236 deals and 5.8% of the market in 1H22.

Hawkins Delafield & Wood rises to the four spot

Hawkins Delafield & Wood moved to the fourth slot, up from sixth in the first half of 2022. The firm worked on $7.599 billion in 108 deals and made up 4.4% of the market, versus last year's $6.213 billion across 128 deals and 3.1% market share.

McCall Parkhurst & Horton falls to fifth

McCall Parkhurst & Horton was bumped from fourth to fifth place in 1H23. The Texas firm's par amount declined slightly, at $7.062 billion across 152 issues, compared to $7.528 billion across 182 issues in 1H22. The firm's market share increased, however, up to 4.1% from 3.7% in the first half of last year.

Rounding out the top 10 are: Bracewell in sixth with $5.239 billion across 50 deals; Nixon Peabody with $4.369 billion across 24 deals; Gilmore & Bell in eighth with $4.154 billion in 134 deals; Chapman and Cutler with $4.122 billion in 87 deals; and Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth in 10th with $3,688 billion across 67 deals.
