Initial claims U.S. state unemployment benefits fell 11,000 to 225,000 in the Dec. 9 week from 236,000 in the prior week, data released by the Labor Department Thursday showed.

Economists surveyed by IFR Markets had forecast claims would rise to 240,000 in the latest week.
The four-week moving average for initial claims fell to 234,750 in the Dec. 9 week from 241,500 in the previous week.
