Puerto Rico April Employment Report is Mixed

United States Bureau of Labor Statistics' issued mixed reports on April employment in Puerto Rico.

The bureau's household survey Friday showed continuing improvement. Total employment in April was up 0.4% from March, 1.4% from a year earlier, and 3% from September 2014, which was the post-recession low. The total employment figure of 1,003,196 was the second highest total employment since May 2013.

The household survey also showed the unemployment rate fell to 11.7%, which tied the lowest rate since June 2008.

The bureau's survey of workplaces showed total employment in April fell 0.1% from March and 1.5% from a year earlier. The survey also indicated that in April private sector employment slipped 0.2% from March and 1.5% from a year earlier.

Some bureau analysts say the divergence is attributable to the inclusion of self-employment and agricultural employment in the household survey. The establishment survey doesn't include these jobs.
