North Carolina Bill OKs $376M in College Bonds

BRADENTON, Fla. - North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed a bill that authorizes $376 million of bond-financed improvements at six University of North Carolina institutions.

McCrory signed House Bill 1182 on July 7 for capital projects at East Carolina University, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State, UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina University, and UNC-Charlotte.

"These building projects will improve the learning and living conditions for our students," McCrory said in a release. "Additionally, they will help create new jobs for North Carolina construction and architectural firms."

The funding to pay for the projects will come from various fees, receipts, grants, and fund raising income.

Bonds will not be secured by tuition or taxpayer monies appropriated by the General Assembly, officials said.

The largest financing will be at East Carolina, where $156 million will be spent improving the student union and health sciences/student services buildings, and constructing a new parking structure.

At UNC-Charlotte, $129 million will be spent building a new residence hall, renovating four residence halls, and various projects ranging from roads to wireless Internet services.

Reynolds Coliseum at NC State will get a $35 million facelift, while $32 million in water chiller plant upgrades will be done at UNC-Chapel Hill. Building renovations are planned at Western Carolina and UNC-Asheville.
