New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation on Aug. 25 authorizing new funding for wastewater infrastructure and clean drinking water projects across the state.
The legislation includes two bills sponsored by State Sen. Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, that authorize the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust provide low-interest loans to local governments, public authorities and water utilities to cover a portion of total costs for 279 eligible environmental infrastructure projects. Sweeney said minimum of $600 million in loans is available in the current fiscal year for approved applications totaling $1.94 billion including roughly $254 million to finance Hurricane Sandy drinking water and sewer projects.
"These bills will make sure thousands of people across New Jersey have access to clean drinking water and improved infrastructure, and are protected from the dangers of storm surge and flooding," said Sweeney in a statement. "I thank the Governor for signing these important pieces of legislation into law."
