LOS ANGELES- The Los Angeles City Council began two weeks of budget hearings on April 28 to review, modify and finalize the $8.5 billion fiscal 2015-16 budget released by the mayor.

During two weeks of hearings, the committee will talk to the leaders of city departments and take comments from the general public.

"My goal is to adopt a strong budget that is fiscally responsible and shows our commitment to public safety and neighborhood services," Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian, who chairs the budget and finance committee, said in a prepared statement.

Krekorian and other members of the budget committee, which includes Mitchell Englander, Bob Blumenfield, Paul Koretz and Mike Bonin, were scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday for their first hearing.

"We had some difficult years during the economic recession when our budget deficit ballooned and we were even threatened with bankruptcy," Krekorian said. "We're no longer on that precipice, but there is still much work to be done. I want to make sure Los Angeles is as safe and financially secure as it can be."
