DALLAS – Former Houston Controller Ronald Green has joined the law firm of Greenberg Traurig as a shareholder specializing in public finance.

Green, who was term-limited as the Houston's elected financial chief, supervised more than $3 billion of bond issues during a period of dramatic growth. Green, 46, managed the city's finances during the 2008-09 recession, after which the Houston economy surged in a booming energy economy. In his final year in office, Houston's economy began to slow after oil prices dropped in mid-2014.

Green's two terms coincided with those of Mayor Anise Parker, who held the Controller's office before Green. Before his election as Controller, Green served six years on the Houston City Council. A Houston native, Green earned his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Houston and his law degree from Texas Southern University, where he has also taught public finance.

"Ronald's deep experience and relationships, and sophisticated understanding of public finance, government law and policy, budgeting and fiscal project management will enable him to serve our clients on a wide range of significant issues," said Douglas C. Atnipp, Greenberg's co-regional operating shareholder for Texas.

Green told The Bond Buyer that his experience representing one of the nation's largest bond issuers will be useful in serving Greenberg's clients.

"For me, it's like an extension of what I've done," he said of his new role. "I think what makes me unique is from an issuer's perspective, I've seen public finance from both sides."

Although he is based in Houston, Green will work for the firm's clients nationwide. He is working as underwriter's counsel on a $130 million deal from Richmond County, Ga.

Green has served as a board member for the National League of Cities, and is a frequent national speaker on municipal finance issues.

In Houston, Green will partner with attorney Frank Jones in public finance. Greenberg has more than 100 attorneys in Texas, with offices in Austin and Dallas, as well as Houston.
