CHICAGO — Detroit officials could announce as early as today, Sept. 23, the future of emergency manager Kevyn Orr's role in the bankrupt city.

City Council members, with other city and state officials, are reportedly trying to work out a deal to keep Orr on in a limited role through what are expected to be the final weeks of the city's Chapter 9 bankruptcy case. The city council is holding a closed-door session to discuss the options today, according to local reports.

Orr's tenure ends Sept. 27 under Michigan's emergency management law, which allows the governor to appoint a manager to take over for 18 months. Orr and Gov. Rick Snyder, who appointed Orr in March, 2013, had hoped the city's bankruptcy would be complete before his tenure was up.

A spokesman for Snyder told the Detroit News that goal is to ensure the city exits bankruptcy "as smoothly and quickly as possibility," and that the state is working with the city to figure out Orr's role.
