January CPI Falls 0.7%; Core Rate Up 0.2%

The January consumer price index dropped 0.7% while the core rate rose 0.2%, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

The December CPI was revised to a 0.3% decline, originally reported as a 0.4% drop, while the December core reading rose 0.1%, originally reported as unchanged.

The median forecast of economists polled by IFR Markets was for a 0.6% decrease in CPI and a 0.1% increase in core.
