Construction spending declined 0.8% in August, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, and is 5.0% above the August 2013 level.
In July, construction spending rose a revised 1.2%, first reported as a 1.8% increase.
Spending on private construction fell 0.8% in the month, while public construction slid 0.9%.
Residential construction dipped 0.1% and single-family housing climbed 0.7% in the month.
Multi-family housing increased 1.4%.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters predicted a 0.5% rise in construction spending.
