LIPA Appoints New Chief Operating Officer

The Long Island Power Authority named John McMahon as the new chief operating officer Friday.

McMahon will oversee the transition of the public utility’s operations from National Grid to a subsidiary of Public Services Enterprise Group.

McMahon has 37 years of utility experience, most of it with Consolidated Edison. Among other things, he served as senior vice president and general counsel at Con Ed.

“John is coming to LIPA at a critical time in its history and we are excited about the expertise he brings to the organization, LIPA board chairman Larry Waldman said in a statement.

“John will also serve as a great resource for the Board and the Governor’s office with respect to pursuing the right organizational structure for LIPA,” Waldman said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for LIPA to be changed and possibly privatized. The authority has come under fire for slow service recovery after major storms, most recently Sandy.
