A series of severe storms that slammed Kansas this winter are the culprits behind March's falloff in sales and income tax collections, officials said.
Revenue from the sales tax was down $11.7 million last month, part of an overall drop of $56.5 million in total collections from the official estimate for March. Individual income tax collections were $32.3 million below predictions.
"Sometimes actions beyond our control can have negative impacts on our state revenue receipts and we must be in a position to absorb the impact," said Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan.
Total collections so far in fiscal 2013 are $8.6 million above expectations and $136 million more than in the first nine months of fiscal 2012, the Department of Revenue said.
Revenue from the income tax is $41.6 million more than expected this year, the department said, but retail sales tax collections are off by $26 million and energy severance tax revenues are down by $5 million.
