L.A. Streetcar Moves Ahead

The Los Angeles City Council approved an operational plan for a downtown streetcar line that would provide up to $352 million of Measure R transportation tax money over 30 years to fund operations costs of the project, according to news reports.

Measure R is a half -cent sales tax passed in 2008 to fund county transportation projects.

The city's Department of Transportation and Bureau of Engineering were instructed to report back with a project management plan in 30 days, according to the Curbed LA website.

The four-mile fixed-rail streetcar system will loop through downtown neighborhoods including South Park, the Financial District, Fashion District, and Broadway.

The Los Angeles City Council approved up to $352 million to maintain a streetcar that would run from the Civic Center to the Convention Center.

The $125 million project will be built with no general fund money. Voters approved forming a special district that will be taxed to finance half of construction costs.

Officials plan to ask federal officials for $75 million to finance the other half of the project.

The line would run 18 hours a day, seven days a week and is slated to open in 2016.
