Texas Sales Tax Take Cools

Texas sales tax collections barely topped $2 billion last month, an increase of almost 4% from February 2012 as the pace of growth slackened into low single-digit territory.

"Sales tax revenues continue to grow, but at a more moderate pace compared to recent months," said Comptroller Susan Combs.

Sales tax collections were up 9.4% in January and 6.7% in February.

Collections from oil and gas production remain at high levels, she said, with most of the modest gain attributed to construction and restaurant sales.

Cities, counties, and transit districts will share $531.3 million of $2.08 billion of February collections, up more than 12% from February 2012.

Cities will receive a total of $348.7 million. Allocations include $45 million to Houston, $18.6 million to Dallas, and $18 million to San Antonio.
