LOS ANGELES — During the California Legislature's last four weeks of its session this year, the Senate must take up roughly 700 bills, according to Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff, R-Diamond Bar.
In his most recent weekly "Capitol Comment," Huff, one of 12 Republicans in the 40-seat Senate, said there are 500 bills currently in the Senate and 114 Senate Bills in the Assembly.
Huff said one of the big items facing the Senate is the twice-delayed $11 billion water bond that's being reconsidered.
The water bond measure, which would allow the state to borrow $11 billion to overhaul its water system, was originally crafted to go on the state's 2010 ballot, then the 2012 ballot, and has since been placed on the 2014 ballot.
The legislature will take up a revised bond proposal which would be significantly smaller than the previous package, at around $7 billion to $8 billion. The cuts would affect funding for the water storage, Huff said.
"What they're talking about now is trimming the storage down from $3 billion to $1 billion and as one member said, a water bond without water storage is a waterless water bond," Huff said in his Capitol Comment. "It doesn't make any sense."
