Donald Irwin, 86, former Conn. Treasurer

Connecticut leaders mourned the death of Donald Irwin, who served two terms in Congress and one two-year term as state treasurer.

Irwin died July 7 at his East Norwalk, Conn., home after an extended illness, the Norwalk Hour reported. He was 86. Irwin was also a mayor of Norwalk.

“Donald Irwin was a dedicated public servant who committed his time, talent and energy to making the city of Norwalk and this state a better place,” Malloy said in a statement.

Irwin, a Democrat, won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1958 when he upset four-term Republican incumbent Albert Morano of Greenwich. After losing his seat to Republican Abner Sibal two years later, Irwin was treasurer from 1961 to 1963 before regaining his congressional seat in a rematch with Sibal.

“Throughout his 16 year career as an elected official, Donald served Connecticut and our citizens with devotion and integrity,” Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman added.

Norwalk voters elected him mayor in 1971.
