Virginia Says No Health Exchange

Gov. Bob McDonnell informed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that Virginia will not be pursuing a state-based health benefits exchange for 2014.

The Affordable Care Act requires states to establish an insurance marketplace by Jan. 1, 2014, or allow the federal government to run one on its behalf. There is also a hybrid model, allowing the state some control.

McDonnell said direction from Washington has been sparse, and further analysis is needed before his administration can determine what it wants to do going forward.
