Airport Breaks Ground

Houston last week broke ground on a $1 billion bond-financed redevelopment of George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Construction of the $160 million first phase of the project is expected to be completed next year.

A 95-foot-wide bridge will provide passenger access to the redeveloped Terminal B, which will include 13,000 square feet of food, beverage and retail concessions and 28-foot-high, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering views of the airfield.

Intercontinental, Houston’s primary airport, serves more than 40 million passengers each year and is a major hub for United Airlines, which merged with formerly Houston-based Continental Airlines.

The Houston airport redevelopment coincides with Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport’s $1.9 billion redevelopment of its four original terminals.

Construction on Terminal A is already underway at DFW.
