Budget Has Medicaid Hole

The Kentucky Legislature is in overtime trying to come up with an agreement to plug a $176 million deficit in the state’s Medicaid program this year.

The regular session ended March 9 without lawmakers adjusting the biennial budget to provide the additional funding so Gov. Steve Beshear called a special session March 14 to deal with the issue.

On Monday, the House passed a bill providing for the funds. The bill is now before the Senate. The state adopts a biennial budget in even years and makes off-year adjustments as necessary but had reached an impasse over Medicaid.
