JeffCo Appeals Go Nowhere

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider the appeals of former Jefferson County commissioner Chris McNair and several contractors who were convicted on bribery charges related to the county’s sewer system.

McNair was convicted for taking bribes while the contractors sought lucrative contracts on the ailing sewer system, which was being rebuilt under federal court order.

Meanwhile, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta heard oral arguments Tuesday in the appeal of former Jefferson County Commission president Larry Langford. He is seeking to overturn his 2009 conviction by an Alabama federal jury that found him guilty on 60 counts of bribery, money laundering, mail and wire fraud, conspiracy, and filing a false tax return.

Langford’s case is related to the financings for the sewer rehabilitation project. He orchestrated sales of $3.2 billion of variable- and auction-rate sewer warrants and swaps that later failed when the credit markets froze.

Langford began serving a 15-year sentence last April. He contends that he did not get a fair trial.
