New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli last week announced that Buffalo, N.Y., Comptroller Andrew SanFilippo will join his office.
SanFilippo, who has been the city’s comptroller since 2003, will be will executive deputy state comptroller for state and local government accountability.
“Andy SanFilippo understands government accountability,” DiNapoli said in a release. “He understands how to use audits as tools to help governments run more efficiently.”
SanFilippo began his tenure as city comptroller the same year the Buffalo Stability Finance Authority was created to take over the city’s finances.
This year, the authority is expected to loosen its control over Buffalo and go into an advisory role from its current “hard control” role.
DiNapoli cited SanFilippo’s work in turning the city’s finances around, restoring its fiscal stability, and reducing long-term bonded indebtedness.
During his tenure, Buffalo received three rating upgrades.
“Buffalo has turned around its finances,” SanFilippo said in a release. “I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”
Before being elected comptroller, SanFilippo was Buffalo’s investment and debt manager from 1980 to 2003, and executive assistant to the city’s comptroller from 1973 to 1980.
SanFilippo will start in his new position on March 17.
