James E. 'Scotty' Ness

James E. "Scotty" Ness is remembered as a successful investor who loved his work and enjoyed widespread respect among his peers.

"He was a very well-liked person," said his son, James. "He was conscientious and really enjoyed the association with his co-workers and with his peers."

Mr. Ness died on Nov. 27 at Harrogate Healthcare Center in Lakewood, N.J. He was 100.

"He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all," the family said in a statement.

Mr.Ness worked in the investment industry all his life, at Kean, Taylor & Co., Howard Savings Bank, Irving Trust Co. and FB Cooper and Co.

Born and raised in Kearny, N.J., Mr. Ness moved to Verona, N.J., where he lived for 35 years and served as a councilman. Mr. Ness was also involved in various religious and civic boards. He finally settled in Normandy Shores and Lakewood.

Mr. Ness was a member of the Bond Club of New York, founded in 1917 to promote standards, fellowship and intellectual dialogue among bond traders. The organization evolved from a group of young bond traders that assembled to help the U.S. Treasury promote the sale of Liberty bonds.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Matthews, and his brother, Howard Ness.

Mr. Ness is survived by his wife of 73 years, Olive; two children, James W. Ness and his wife Rita, and Deborah N. Lamont and her husband Alexander; five grandchildren, Scott, Cory, Geoffrey, Erin and Stephen; three great-grandchildren, Amelia, Owen and Chase; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cowburn; and many nieces and nephews.

Internment took place on Nov. 30 at Arlington Cemetery in Kearny following funeral services at the D'Elia Funeral Home in Lakewood.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Ness' memory to the All Saints Episcopal Church, Bay Head, N.J.
