New Treasurer Tapped

Gov. Nathan Deal Monday announced that Steve McCoy will become Georgia’s next treasurer.

McCoy will succeed Tommy Hills, who announced that he will retire at the end of October.

McCoy has been deputy state treasurer and chief investment officer since August.

From 1993 to 1997, McCoy served as the director of the office of treasury and fiscal services, now the office of the state treasurer. He was executive director of the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority from 1992 to 1993.

From 1997 to 2010, he founded and managed a Securities and Exchange Commission-registered investment advisory firm for state and local governments. Before joining the state, McCoy spent 11 years in investment banking, specializing in municipal finance.

He earned a bachelor of business administration degree in finance from the University of Georgia and a masters of business administration degree from Georgia State University.

The governor appointed state Sen. Mitch Seabaugh, R-Sharpsburg, to succeed McCoy as deputy state treasurer. A special election will be called to replace Seabaugh in the Legislature.
