SAISD Joins Suit vs. State

San Antonio Independent School District trustees voted last week to be a party in a proposed lawsuit seeking to overturn the system for allocating state funds to public school districts.

The lawsuit by a consortium of school districts and parents may be filed as early as October, said Wayne Pierce, executive director of the Equity Center. He said the suit would be filed by the Taxpayer and Student Fairness Association.

The current funding system includes inequitable variations in state per-student funding in districts with the same tax rate due to imbalances in property values across Texas, Pierce said.

The Equity Center recently added to its legal staff in preparation for the lawsuit, he said.

The center was established in 1982 by 55 Texas school districts to represent their financial positions. The membership currently includes more than 600 of the state’s 1,000 public school districts.
