Medical Merger in Offing

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Aug. 9 at Quincy High School on the proposed $38 million sale of Quincy Medical Center Inc. to Steward Health Care System LLC.

Coakley’s office will also accept written comments during the review process.

By law, her office must review the proposed sale of a charitable nonprofit organization to a for-profit entity.

Steward has offered $38 million for Quincy Medical if the hospital can restructure its debt in bankruptcy court. Quincy Medical filed for Chapter 11 last month in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of Massachusetts in Worcester. It is looking to restructure $56 million of Series A revenue bonds, issued in 2008 through the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority.

The parties want to close the sale by October.
