Sales Taxes Keep Revving

The state sales tax generated $1.95 billion in May, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said last week, an increase of 10% from May 2010 collections.

"Texas has now had 14 straight months of sales tax revenue increases," Combs said.

Sales tax collections were up from retail, oil and gas, and manufacturing sectors, she said.

Local governments and special districts will receive a total of $468.7 million from the revenue in June, an increase of 7.2% from last year.

Cities will share $311.8 million of the revenue, up 6.6% from June 2010.

Allocations to cities in calendar 2011 are up 6.3% from the same period last year. They include $38.2 million to Houston, $16.2 million to San Antonio, $15.6 million to Dallas, and $11.4 million to Austin.

The 123 counties with a local sales tax will share $30.3 million from the May revenues, an increase of 13.6% from May 2010.

Allocations also include $105.3 million to 10 local transit systems and $21 million distributed among 179 special taxing districts.
