Pension Fund’s Big Returns

North Carolina’s pension fund reported an 11.97% return in the fiscal year ending June 30, according to the state treasurer’s office.

The North Carolina Retirement Systems fund provides benefits for more than 820,000 state workers.

The fund’s equity portion returned 14.3% for the year and its fixed-income portfolio returned 13.2%.

It experienced a 4.9% drop in the second quarter, with total assets at $65.3 billion.

“The pension fund was hit hard by the 2008 crash and requires contributions from our state and local governments now and into the future in order to remain healthy,” state Treasurer Janet Cowell said in a statement released Monday.

Though North Carolina’s pension fund reported a 14% decline in assets in fiscal 2008, it remains one of the strongest state pension funds in the country.

A February report on state pension funds from the Pew Center on the States found North Carolina had 99% of its pension obligations funded compared to an 84% average for all states.
