A public-private partnership of the Greater Birmingham Regional Planning Commission, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and Norfolk-Southern railroad will study the feasibility of a high-speed rail connection between Birmingham and Atlanta.
The P3 announced that a $500,000 feasibility study of creating the corridor would begin July 1. Half of the funding is coming from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The year-long study is expected to examine railroad speed and technology, ridership, operating and maintenance costs, and economic impacts.
