95 Schools on the Bubble

The state put 95 schools on its watch and early warning list following an annual review of districts’ financial status in the Illinois Board of Education’s 2010 school district financial profile report.

A total of 66 were put on the early warning list, up by six from a year earlier. The ranking means the districts are one step away from financial watch under which they would face set monitoring guidelines.

The annual review was conducted on 578 districts. About two-thirds received the highest status of financial recognition. The review was conducted using fiscal 2009 results.

The next review could result in more schools being added to the watch or early warning list as federal stimulus funds end and districts grapple with late state aid payments and possible cuts proposed in Illinois’ fiscal 2011 budget.
