Muskogee ISD Eyes Debt

Proposals for a new high school that would be financed through a $15 million bond program were outlined last week to trustees of Muskogee County Independent School District 29.

Trustees must decide by July 24 whether to set an election in August, which would be the earliest date available.

Tentative plans call for a new high school and renovation of two elementary schools, which share a campus, into a single facility.

The high school would cost $10.5 million, with the renovation project estimated at $2.5 million.

Superintendent D.B. Merrill said passage of the proposed $15 million package would require a $30 million increase in the district’s property tax rate.

The district has a debt capacity of $3.9 million based on current property valuations, officials said. Bonds would be issued in several tranches as capacity is available.
