Honolulu’s New Budget Boss

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann has a new budget and finance director for his second term in office, which started last month.

He nominated Rix Maurer 3d as director of budget and fiscal services for the city. He replaced Mary Patricia Waterhouse, “who is transferring to the private sector,” according to the mayor’s office.

Maurer is already serving as interim budget director, and the City Council’s finance committee was expected to approve the nomination Wednesday. It was also slated to give Maurer the authority to oversee the issuance almost $1.4 billion in general obligation bonds in the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

Before joining the Hannemann administration, Maurer was treasurer and vice president for financial services for the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He had worked there since 1983.

“With the tight budget situation the city is facing, I wanted to reach out and hire one of the most experienced financial officers around,” Hannemann said in a statement. “He will bring fresh ideas to help with our budget, and will be an excellent addition to our team.”
