Wish Hard for New Hospital

The Marion County Health and Hospital Corp. on Nov. 3 will ask voters in Indianapolis and Marion County to approve a $754 million bond proposal to finance a new facility that would replace Wishard Hospital.

Wishard officials said they currently pay roughly $25 million annually to maintain the Indianapolis hospital’s buildings, which average 60 years old. Debt service on a new hospital would total $38 million annually, they said.

This week the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce endorsed the plan.

“We believe the construction of a new Wishard Hospital is firmly in the best interest of our city, and will have significant benefits for residents and the business community,” chamber president Roland Dorson said in a statement. “After thorough research and study, we find the plan for this project to be financially sound and are confident it should place no additional burden on the taxpayers of Marion County.
