Court Considers Casinos

The Kansas Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week on the state’s new gambling law that allows casinos in Wyandotte, Cherokee, Sumner, and Ford counties, and slot machines at racetracks in Frontenac and Kansas City.

The law passed in 2007 calls for the casinos to be owned and operated by the Kansas Lottery. The lottery will contract with developers to build and operate casinos.

The state will receive at least 22% of net casino annual revenue, with local governments getting 3% of net revenues.

The state expects to realize more than $200 million a year in gambling revenues when all four casinos are operational.

The gambling measure allocates 1.5% of a casino’s net revenues to the county and 1.5% to the city where it is located.
