Harris County is expected to issue commercial paper next year to finance a planned $65 million restoration of the old civil courthouse in downtown Houston.
Edwin Harrison, the county’s director of financial services, said the county would replace the notes with long-term financing when the project is completed.
County officials will ask commissioners to approve the construction phase of the project in January. Work could begin in the spring and be completed by October 2011.
The renovated building, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, will serve as the new home for the First and 14th Texas Courts of Appeal, which are located at South Texas College of Law.
The six-story granite and brick structure was built in 1910 at a cost of $500,000. At one time it housed all downtown county offices and all county courts. It was closed in 2006.
