The federal government ran a $91.1 billion budget surplus in September, the Treasury Department reported Thursday.
The September surplus followed a $64.4 billion budget deficit in August. The September deficit was smaller than the median $95 billion surplus predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
Outlays in September totaled $274.412 billion, compared to $275.257 billion in August. Receipts totaled $365.473 billion in September, compared to $210.837 billion for the previous month.
In September 2014, the government ran a $105.804 billion surplus.
For the fiscal year, the government ran a $438.9 billion deficit compared to a $483.4 billion deficit in fiscal 2014.
