The federal government ran an $82.4 billion budget deficit in May, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.
The May deficit followed an unrevised $156.7 billion budget surplus in April. The May deficit was smaller than the median $98 billion deficit predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
Outlays in May totaled $294.771 billion, compared to $315.092 billion in April. Receipts totaled $212.386 billion in May, compared to $417.801 billion for the previous month.
In May 2014, the government ran a $126.971 billion deficit.
For the fiscal year to date, the government is running a $365.157 billion deficit compared to a $436.383 billion deficit at the same point last year.
