The federal government ran a $64.4 billion budget deficit in August, the Treasury Department reported Friday.
The August deficit followed a $149.2 billion budget deficit in July. The August deficit was smaller than the median $83 billion deficit predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
Outlays in August totaled $275.257 billion, compared to $374.680 billion in July. Receipts totaled $210.837 billion in August, compared to $225.493 billion for the previous month.
In August 2014, the government ran a $128.677 billion deficit.
For the fiscal year to date, the government is running a $529.962 billion deficit compared to a $589.161 billion deficit at the same point last year.
