Treasury: U.S. Gov’t Ran $34.5B Deficit in September; $1.29T Deficit for FY

WASHINGTON – The government ran a $34.5 billion deficit in September and ended the fiscal year with a $1.29 trillion deficit, down from last year’s annual deficit, the Treasury Department reported Friday.

Monthly revenues totaled $245.2 billion and outlays totaled $279.7 billion. It was 24th consecutive monthly deficit.

For the fiscal year, receipts totaled $2.16 trillion, or 14.9% of gross domestic product, and outlays totaled $3.46 trillion, or 23.8% of GDP.

The 2010 deficit was 8.9% of GDP, down from 10.0% in fiscal 2009.

Economists expected the September budget deficit would be $35.0 billion, according to the median estimate from Thomson Reuters.

The August deficit was unchanged at $90.5 billion.
