Revenue Comes Up Short

Idaho’s Division of Financial Management reported Monday that preliminary April tax revenue came in $55.5 million lower than expected.

Gov. Butch Otter, a Republican, said the report justified his work with lawmakers earlier this year to enact budget cuts.

Revenue was down despite increased sales tax receipts and increased income tax withholding for the current year, he said.

“However, April’s tax filings largely still reflect what was happening with the economy last year — not over these past few months of marginally improving conditions,” Otter said in a statement.

“The Legislature deserves a lot of credit for working with me to ensure Idaho’s state government lives within the people’s means,” he said.
